Core Subjects of the

 National Curriculum

Literacy

The school aims to foster confident, articulate children who are able to communicate through the written and spoken word.

We use the National Literacy Framework as a basis for developing the children’s reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.

The children undertake five sessions of ‘Word, Sentence and Text’ work in English, plus reading time and ‘Extended Writing’

Time.  There is an emphasis on giving children the technical knowledge and language through which they can discuss and improve their work.

Children now spend more time reading text in a group or as a whole class, spending less time, than in the past, reading individually to the teacher.

The children have access to a wide variety of books in their classrooms and in the Library.

From Year 3 upwards the children take part in an annual Public Speaking Competition organised by the Rotary Club.

Mathematics

The mathematics curriculum is divided into four parts: -

In the ‘Using and Applying’ aspect, children use the skills and knowledge they have gained in solving practical problems independently.

The core of the Maths work is based on the National Numeracy Framework plus a wide range of other resources and equipment.

Science

The science curriculum is divided into four parts: -

Through work on experimental and investigative science the children are encouraged to be observant, inquisitive and to develop skills of scientific enquiry and experimentation.

Information and Communications Technology (ICT)

The school has its own ICT suite of computers, including a smart board and digital media facilities, (next to the Library) as well as computers in each classroom and smartboards in all classes from Year 2 upwards.

In the suite, children are taught, and are able to practise ICT skills relevant to their age group and are able to interact with a wide range of software to support their work in other curriculum areas.

The school has a website and the children are able to access the Internet and E-mail facilities.  The school is developing links with other schools in this country and abroad.

The school has access to the ‘Leeds Learning Network’ that provides a safe link to the Internet and a huge range of other educational resources.

All staff have completed ‘New Opportunities Fund’ (NOF) training in ICT and have access to laptops.

Our ratio of computer to child is 1:5, which is well above the national average.
