Year 4's Tudor Day

On Tuesday 27th April, year 4 spent all day learning about 'The Tudors'.

A lady called Catherine came to visit and taught us lots of interesting things.

Firstly, we got to handle different artefacts that rich and poor

Tudors would have used...

Then we worked in groups, looking at many more artefacts.

We had to decide what we thought each one was and sketch it carefully...

When we had done this , Catherine went through the artefacts, explaining what

each one was.  We thought it was pretty disgusting, that one clay pot was

used for weeing in...YUK!!

Next, we worked with a partner to do some Tudor numeracy work!  We used a counting

board and glass beads to count using Latin Numerals. It was a bit tricky at first,

but we soon got the hang of it!!

After that, we cracked one of the codes used by Mary Queen of Scots when she was

imprisoned by her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I.  It said "let the great plot go ahead".  We

then used the code to write a message to one of our friends.  Did you know there was no

letter 'J' in Tudor times?

Following our code cracking, we learnt all about Tudor warfare and weapons.  We got

to handle different weapons such as a long bow, swords and a musket.  Some of us

even got to try on a soldier's helmet!

Finally, we learnt two Tudor dances in the hall.  The first one was called 'The Hermit's

Brawl' and the second was called 'The Peas Brawl'.  Brawl just means danced in a circle.
