About our Governors
The Governing Body has a legal responsibility to manage the school with a view to promoting high standards of educational achievement in all areas of the school. It has a strategic role, and also acts as a critical friend to the Head teacher and Management team,, monitoring and reviewing progress throughout the year.
Working in cooperation with the Head teacher, the aims and objectives of the school are decided by the Governing body. At Crossley Street School we have a committee structure to make the work more manageable. Currently we have Curriculum, Finance, Buildings (including Health & Safety) and Remuneration. All Governors sit on one or more Committee. The work that the committees do is reported back at full governors meetings.
The Governing Body is made up different types of governor: the Head teacher, School, (Teaching and non teaching) Parent, Community, and Local Authority. The range of expertise and experience contributes to the effectiveness of the group. . This gives a mix of experience and viewpoints which is key to the effectiveness of the body. The role of Governor is a voluntary position with a term of office of 4 years.
Each class has a linked Governor which both helps further their knowledge and understanding of the school and also provides a chance of getting involved in some way, perhaps once or twice a term, either with a class or with an event. For example, attending an assembly, joining a school visit or just helping or observing in class for a few hours.
There are other specific roles that governors take on such as Child Protection Governor, Literacy/Numeracy Governor, Special Needs Governor or Healthy Schools Governor. This spread of responsibility ensures that the school is meeting the various targets in its OfSTED Action Plan and School Improvement plan.
There are five full governing body meetings a year, to which the committees report.
The governors welcome communication with parents and other stakeholders, but any concerns should be directed to the Head teacher in the first instance.
