Inclusion & Special Education Needs
We celebrate diversity and believe that everyone should be included and all have much to contribute to our school. We value all children whatever their background, and provide a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere that does not discriminate on the grounds of gender, ethnicity, culture, religion or ability.
Children with special educational needs, whether in our unit class or in mainstream classes, are fully supported with differentiated work, additional help as required and a wide range of learning opportunities.
We identify and nurture pupils if they have a gift or talent in a specific area whether it be academic, creative or sporting and we aim to support every child in developing all their skills so they may reach their potential and achieve to the best of their ability.
Care is taken in each class to match work to the ability levels of the children, so that the more able are challenged and those that experience difficulties are given extra assistance. Children's needs differ greatly from pupil to pupil, but all are fully included within the life of our school.
Mrs Price in her role as Special Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) provides advice and support to staff and the parents of children on the Special Needs Register. An up-to-date register of all children with special needs is maintained.
If the class teacher feels that a child is experiencing particular difficulty with some aspect of their learning she will discuss her concerns with the SENCO. Parents are informed about the concern and where appropriate additional resources, specific programmes and individual support provided.
If appropriate, individual education plans are drawn up and reviewed on a termly basis. Support from other agencies, such as the speech therapist or educational psychologist is sought at the Early Years Action Plus/School Action Plus stage, if it is felt to be required by the parents and staff.
There are no special admission arrangements for pupils with disabilities, since in the event of over-subscription, the published criteria for determining places is applied and, as such, does not differentiate between pupils with or without disabilities. Similarly, if an application were made to transfer a pupil into the school, the normal admission procedures would apply.
We have a large, well resourced building on two floors with wheelchair access to the ground level. In addition, our recently installed lift and disabled toilet and shower room now allows full wheelchair access to all the rooms and facilities on the first floor.
The school has been designated a Primary Resource Provision from September 2007 and will admit 10 children with moderate or complex needs from the full primary age range.
